Education

John Guild Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), supports education of youth and their teachers in our community here in southeast Missouri. Education is one of the three core values for the Daughters of the American Revolution, with the other two being patriotism and historic preservation. We believe the American Revolution paved the way for public education. Under George Washington’s presidency, the first Education Act in 1789 enabled public education.

DAR Good Citizens

John Guild Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), rewards and encourages local students in the Southeast Missouri area through the DAR Good Citizens program and Scholarship Contest. These students of good citizenship are nominated by their teachers and fellow students because they shine in dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism, not only in their school, but also at home and in their community.  The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited and in good standing with their State Board of Education.  Our annual DAR Good Citizen may then move on for a chance to be selected as an essay winner for a scholarship at the Missouri state level, and then the South Central division level, and then national level. We are proud of our local DAR Good Citizens!

Outstanding Teacher of American History

The John Guild Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), has great respect for our Outstanding Teacher of American History Contest honorees. This program observes notable full-time teachers of history (or related fields such as social studies, government, and citizenship education) in public, private, and parochial schools, grades 5-12. Honorees are selected each fall, and as the chapter winner they have the opportunity to compete for the Missouri State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Teacher of American History. If successful, their information is forwarded to the National Society for consideration in the national level competition.

The John Guild Chapter, NSDAR, has been honored to have two state level Outstanding Teachers of American History in 2023 and 2024. They were honored with a certificate and monetary award by the John Guild Chapter, NSDAR. At the Missouri State level, they were also honored with a certificate, lapel pin, and monetary award at the MSSDAR state conference.

We recognize the importance of outstanding teachers and the role they take in educating future generations. We are proud to help further shine a spotlight on the DAR mission pillar of education through our endeavors to recognize outstanding history teachers.
